Extracts from the report by Mobile Doctor Dr Gita Pun
……After the morning tea we proceeded for a near by village Biddim where as we were told some Welfare Pensioners (WPs) are living. We started early so as to be back by 10 AM and to go to a drinking water project site with Project Supervisor Mr Tamang. After 10 minutes walk in a dusty track we followed another side track down hill thinking it as a short cut route. We had walked down quite a distance and when we met a middle aged man coming up whom we queried whereabouts the home of WPs. To our frustration we found out that we have taken down wrong route and climbed all the way up arriving to a WP's home at about 9.30 AM. The old WP widow was sitting at the courtyard of her old home. She looked quite fine. We talked for a while then I examined her. Her vitals were normal except she had some vision problem and gave her some medicines and advice. Next was another 80 years old widow some 5 minutes walk away. She was sitting by fireside and looked quite fragile but she said she didn't have any problem as such and her vitals were also quite normal. I gave her some vitamins and advised her not to stay in smoke for too long that may cause her vision problem. Then we headed back all the way uphill just in time for lunch. After lunch the Water Project staffs gathered for a check up and also some volunteer workers from community and their relatives as well. By the time we finished the clinic it was quite late and we couldn't make to the water project site. A short welcome and thank you speech from Mr Tamang and we set off for a long walk back to the Area Welfare Centre (AWC) to be ready for pension payment the following day…….

….AWO Sahib, casual porter and I started our journey from AWC at 6.30 AM. Little up hill walk for half an hour and one and half hour straight across the hill and then down hill till we reached our sponsor; a Service Pensioner's (SP) home in Thichambu at around 12 noon. On the way we missed the path to the sponsor's home so it took half an hour extra time to reach there. After delicious lunch of fish curry at his home we went to our designated clinic place some 20 minutes walk away to a small bazaar area. Few pensioners were already waiting there in a small local hotel where our night stay was arranged. By 2 PM the clinic was over and we waited for another half an hour. But no patients turned up so we decided to do home visit for WP Ranbahadur Limbu a paralysed pensioner some 20 minutes walk away. When we reached there he was found taking his afternoon tea and snack. After a brief talk I started his examination. He looked quite healthy with normal vitals. On thorough examination it was found that his left lower limb was quite weak but upper left limb was fine and if he kept on regular physiotherapy there is a chance of much improvement. So I advised his son and daughter-in-law who arrived later from field work, to help him for therapy and practically showed how to do physiotherapy. It was clear that Ranbahadur was reluctant to do any exercises so I advised him how better he could live with therapy. Later his wife Sanchamaya arrived who was actually diagnosed of with uncontrolled HTN was also diabetic taking OHA. I prescribed her some antihypertensive medicine and also advised to follow up during pension time for re-checkup…..
